Wanted to keep my discussions to the latest release.

Ikoma Daimyo : Ikoma Hakige
Imperial Heir: Iweko Seiken

Interesting to note that only there are multiple heirs and only one of them was sent to Spider. The details during the last race were not clear, but I think it was implied that the Spider were to train THE imperial heir. So this is a nice surprise I would guess. I am also hoping to see more story time for Iweko Setai before he has to bite the dust.

Not only was it not implied, I was very, very careful to make sure that it said "AN Imperial heir" at all times, rather than "THE Imperial heir."

Interpretation is always a sticky matter, of course.

You know, the idea of multiple heirs to a monarch intrigues me. I know English is a very muddled language, but as far as I've been able to discern when it comes to dynasties only one child at a time can be an heir unless you plan on subdividing the empire on the event of the monarch's death.

I know that's really far down the road but some sort of post-Charlemagne or post-Alexander period after the conquest/expansion arc could be epic. Ooh, or even an East-West Roman/Byzantine split ... that could be crazy-awesome.

But coming back from that wild speculative tangent, it was a pleasure to read this story. It was fun and informative.

I hope AN heir means just not the first in the line of succession and doesn't say anything about a split like you mentioned.

Ya... I guess when the race got heated up close to the end, people were thinking on a single heir rather then the assumption that there would be multiple heirs only to motivate themselves. *shrugs* It's not that big of a deal, just a nice surprise IMO like I said.

And also, I completely forgot about the Mantis section which was well written but we will see how things shake out. I'm hoping to see a lot more story on the new Mantis Champion and hopefully resolution on the Mantis storyline concerning Anshu.

I liked the story a lot, I was hoping there would be a way to avoid having a Spider trained emporer in the future (or an epic fight for the throne)

I think the "low-impact" interpretation is just that the Empress has yet to name an heir to the throne. That would make all of her children her personal heirs.

That's how Toturi did it, after all.

I think if I sat on a throne and really loved all my kids, I would tell them all that they were special. I wouldn't want to play favorites. That might just cause resentments and drive them apart. Or motivate some of them to murder the others like that that one kid of the 15th Hantei's.

If I was a samurai overlord, I would tell all of my children that their lives only had meaning as a tribute to our blessed ancestors. They would be taught that to sit on a throne is just one way of serving - a test, not a reward.

Hopefully they wouldn't all turn out like Hoturi.

You mean undead badasses with Fu Leng's fist-sized holes in their chests where their hearts should be?

Dude, my kids could do a lot worse. ;)

That was just a dream, Marty.

The real deal has been angsting over Kachiko for decades. I sometimes think he should just take a jump like the other Spirits did, but he's such a nice guy... pity the KTSU gig didn't work out, I think that really could have been the start of something good for him.

The last time we saw Hoturi in John Wick's story.

Man, I really need to spend some time catching up on the fictions. It's one of the biggest reasons I got into the game, the fact that there are actually stories and reasons behind the cards...I envy those of you who have been around long enough to know all this stuff.

“My thanks, Hakige-san,” Seiken said. “Unfortunately it might be some time before I can return. I have training with the Scorpion Clan to the south next month, and some time among the Crane following that.” He smiled. “I prefer the company of my father’s kinsmen, but you can understand my obligations are considerable.”

Yamahatsu bowed deeply. “It was my pleasure to serve you during your stay, my lord,” he said. “I do not envy you your duties, spending so much time among the different Great Clans.”

“It can be difficult, but rewarding,” Seiken said. “Each clan has its strengths. Each of the true Great Clans, that is.”

Oh, Seiken, I barely know you and already love you. :big grin:
