I saw the other day that TOMB is soon to be releasing a new expansion, TOMB of Iuchiban! Completely L5R themed, new board, etc. Having never played TOMB, I was of course curious to see what it was like, so I picked up TOMB: Cryptmasters, the Warlord themed expansion.
It was the most fun 2 hours I have ever spent playing a board game!
For those of you unfamiliar, in TOMB, you recruit a party of adventurers, then venture into a CLUE like map to explore the various “rooms”, each stocked with monsters, traps, curses, and treasures. The tomb contents are near randomly generated each game, meaning endless variety.
A word of caution: Don’t get too attached to your party. You won’t have them long.
Play is fast, brutal, and deadly. Wipes are common, but don’t worry. There are plenty more unsuspecting idiots….errr…. I mean, willing adventurers waiting back at the inn to join your party.
The materials for the game themselves I found to be of very good quality. The cardboard used for the tokens is THICK, very solid, and should hold up for years. The artwork is of course, excellent, and the flavor of the cards is often humorous, for example there is an item called “10 foot pole”, and a spell called “death ray”.
Added in is a “screw your opponent” element, as you control the monsters, traps, and curses he encounters in the dungeon. You can also attack his party, or steal from his characters.
So… has anyone else played these games? What did you think?
