2012 Kotei PageSo we have most of the information we need for the coming Kotei season and what we may select as prizes. Now to post some ideas/suggestions and have some discussion on what we would like for the Lion. The locations that spring to the top for me include the following: The Tomb of Sun Tao Ruins of the Ivory Palace Farmlands (Extensive) Farmlands (Exotic) The Tomb of Sun Tao sounds like it would be just awesome. I really want this for the Tacticians of our clan. We could even repair his tomb and take this opportunity to have the Kitsu speak with his spirit, if he was willing. It might even give us some more insight into the Yodotai if he was truly a spy for them. Akodo Kamina would be a great personality choice for this. The Ivory Palace looks like it was the seat of power in the Ivory Kingdoms before everything came down so we could learn a lot from whatever knowledge remains of their Kingdom or what might remain of their knowledge on neighboring Empires. If for no other reason then because they might still be around to cause trouble. I don't have anyone particular in mind but I imagine any of our scouts would be a good choice to investigate Ruins. Finally, as Marty mentioned, Farms/Ports are always important holdings and since no Ports really leapt out at me either Farm sounds good as a method to support our troops in the Colonies or even to send supplies back to Rokugan proper. Considering how much I love Grateful Reward I wouldn't mind some Paragons taking these locations to care for our armies. All in all I believe risk shouldn't be a concern for the Lion because when have the Lion ever shirked from danger when it would serve the Clan. There are a number of good choices amongst the Districts so whatever people want for risk/reward should be fine.

The tomb of Sun Tao does sound pretty cool. I thinking we should definitely try for that.
My strategy is that we should try to develop a strong set of closely knit support colonies as a sort of foothold. We'd start at the coastline so we could ship troops and supplies back and forth between the mainland and the colonies and wouldn't have to go through other clans to do that.
Then we should work our way a little inland trying for resources in my opinion to really establish ourselves before we can begin going for the crazy tough prizes like everyone else will be.
I'm thinking also we should try developing our cavalry to start trying to play catch-up with the Unicorn. So maybe we could try to grab the stables with the gaijin horses?

I will be hitting a couple of Kotei and love the idea of the Tomb of Sun Tao and the Farms.

I would like to focus on District 5, though I do like the farms in District 2. The article about it in the latest Herald said "Clans that consolidate their holdings will find that they have a strong power base in the conflicts to come, while clans that are scattered may have more difficulty if their enemy's come for them...". District 5 is the most dangerous and most rewarding so we will get good cards out of it and probably better stories. The resources I like are:
District 1: The Empty Plains Eternal Oasis
District 2: New Rokugan Imperial Explorers Dojo Farmland (extensive) Farmland (exotic)
District 5: The Unknown Lands Ruins of the Ivory Palace The Last Village Buried Temple (Partialy Intact) Lost Fortress of the Ebonite Templars The Tomb of Sun Tao Spirit Portal of Unknown Affiliation
The Pool of True Divination also looks interesting but it's more a Scorpion thing.

I'd kind of like a port - just so I don't have to rely on the Mantis, Crane, or Unicorn to ship the production of said farms back to the homeland. They skim way too much off the top and I don't like being beholden to them.
And we're not even going to broach the subject of *shudder* Tortoise Clan ships carrying goods to and from Lion lands.

An Orange-and-Gold colored swath covering zones 3-3, 2-13, and 2-12 with two Farmlands and a Port while surveying both forks in the great river on that map would make for a brilliant tactical position - militarily and economically. Then maybe 4-8 or 4-6 for a stable of War Elephants? I hear the Yodotai are helpless in the face of Elephant Cavalry. - Marty Lund

I like your thinking Gen. Lund! I had considered that possibly controlling the forks might be a good idea. Thinking in the longterm though we should definitely try to acquire a coastal territory first and foremost.
We'll build up infrastructure and then start going for the good prizes which I'm totally digging we should go for the Tomb of Sun Tao as our first uber-prize.

The good prizes will be gone if we focus on areas 2-3 first ). We can go for them when area 5 is full nearly/full IMO. As for a coastal region there is a strip in the Unknown/Frontier lands of coastal regions and we just need one of them to stick. (Also I think any effort for the coast will have to be followed up with some neighbours quickly as a coastal region surrounded by mantis won't help as any ships leaving or entering wil just be 'taxed'.
I do like the idea of going for the fork but there are a lot of areas and kotei, most of which will be forgotten after the initial fic so I'm more worried about making sure its a good one followed by giving story team a chance to get a set of regions a longer term affect.
Although I'm unlikely to win too many kotei's to help enact this plan much.
I wonder if there is a section of the map covered by two clans if we could get any stories of cross clan co-operation...

Christy wrote: The good prizes will be gone if we focus on areas 2-3 first ). Yes and no. There are a couple of first-pick items and then the stuff in the high-complications, high-productivity areas gets kind of random. Remember something, nobody promised you anything good from your picks. High complication zones can turn into poison-pill prizes without anyone giving you an ounce of sympathy. Zone 3 has only 5 provinces in it, and those look like the only productive coastal prospects among the prizes. They could vanish very fast. I do very much like the idea of grabbing a contiguous stretch of a port and two bread-basket provinces that also happen to have control over the forks. The "good" prizes are crap-shoots and are way out in the boondocks. We might find valuable treasure or adventure out there but I'm a conservative tactician and I'm all about the infrastructure - one of the Lion Clan's weakest points. - Marty Lund

Think about it guys, we're not just going to get some prize that may or may not be good. We are establishing the actual pieces of the new map of the Emerald Empire. We are actually going to gain territory that the clan will most likely possess for a good while.
Let's think about helping our clan rebuild to full strength before going for the fun magic maguffins that may or may not be double edged swords.
